Great Bay is a complex, tidally dominated estuary covering approximately 17 square miles of southeastern New Hampshire at the Maine border. The Great Bay Estuary encompasses many distinct habitats and is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna.
Real time access to water quality and weather data provided by the Great Bay Environmental Monitoring Network allows researchers, and now Internet users, to track changes in the environmental conditions of Great Bay as they happen.
Today in-situ water quality sensors record water temperature, depth, salinity, oxygen levels, pH, turbidity and nitrates every thirty minutes at locations throughout the estuary. Data is transmitted from the sensors to Jackson Estuarine Laboratory in near real time using a variety of wireless communications technologies.
Data presented on these pages is made through the combined efforts and support of the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve's Systemwide Monitoring Program (SWMP), the New Hampshire Estuaries Project, and the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology or CICEET. The Great Bay NERR supports the operation of the YSI 6600 datasondes sites in Great Bay, and the Lamprey, Squamscott and Oyster Rivers, and the GOES satellite telemetry transmitter attached to the Oyster River Sonde. The New Hampsire Estuaries Project supports the operation of the Fort Point and Salmon Falls River Sondes. Telemetry at the Great Bay, Squamscott, Lamprey and Fort Point sites, as well as the web posting of the data is supported by CICEET. Programming and graphics are by Interactive Oceanographics.
